Bright Bean Cafe: Brewing hope and community at St Ann’s Hospital

The Bright Bean Cafe at St Ann’s Hospital in Poole, Dorset, is more than just a cafe—it’s a symbol of community and hope. Established by a team of secure occupational therapists at Dorset HealthCare University Foundation NHS Trust – one of the For Me Provider Collaborative partners – this initiative tackles various challenges faced by the hospital and its patients.

St Ann’s Hospital provides mental health care, serving a diverse patient population including secure patients from the provider collaborative. Despite the hospital’s lovely grounds, there was no communal space for patients to relax and connect with loved ones, which impacted their ability to maintain relationships and their overall functional skills.

From concept to cup

With a simple, yet powerful vision, the Bright Bean Café aims to create a space for all, to encourage connection and support among patients, staff, and visitors. It also provides patients with work opportunities, helping them develop essential skills for life post-discharge, and an awareness of charities like Unlock, who support those with criminal convictions.

The project became a reality thanks to the hard work of the occupational therapists and a partnership with Full Circle Coffee Company. Patients received bespoke barista training, supported by the Forensic Occupational Therapy Service, who helped them develop the skills needed to run the cafe successfully.

A bustling hub

Since January 2019, the Bright Bean Cafe has made a significant positive impact. It has become a bustling hub of activity, reducing social isolation and boosting patients’ self-worth. Many patients have since left the service and gone on to regular paid employment. Importantly, the cafe is now a sustainable venture.

The feedback speaks volumes. One staff member mentioned, “The Bright Bean Cafe has a very good vibe for the hospital. It creates a positive feel in what was just a dead space – a place for people to chat and meet.” A patient shared, “I really enjoy working at the cafe; it gives me something to do and makes me feel different – in a good way.”

Brewing solutions

Of course, the project hasn’t been without its hurdles. The team has managed different patient mix, safety concerns, funding, staffing shortages, and limited space.

Through perseverance and teamwork, they’ve developed effective processes and guidance, building strong relationships with ward staff.

Supporting the project to become sustainable and self-funding has seen patients show real creativity and dedication. They have crafted handmade coasters, baked goods, and held unique competitions, raising a total of £115 for the Unlock charity and patient activities.

Additionally, Mental Health Awareness Week in May saw them baking cookies, raising an impressive £40.50 in just two hours. These events not only support the café’s charitable goals but also provide additional life skills to the volunteers, whilst ensuring the project continues to exist and make a positive impact on the community.

Looking ahead

The future looks strong for the Bright Bean Cafe. Plans include extending the opening hours, and longer term, further expanding the concept across the Trust within a new community space. The team is also keen to share their model with other mental health organisations interested in replicating this successful initiative.

The Bright Bean Cafe is proof of the power of community and teamwork. It has transformed an unused space into a vibrant, supportive environment that offers valuable opportunities for patients. This success story is a reminder of the positive impact such initiatives can have within our healthcare system.
