Patients at Ravenswood House, one of the adult secure units we commission in Hampshire, recently had a simple but impactful idea: they wanted a shelter in the grounds to enjoy the outdoors in all weather. In winter, there was no cover from the rain. In summer, no shade.
During their regular Patient Council meeting, they shared their idea with unit staff who listened and researched the idea.
Three shelter designs were created. Together, patients chose a metal structure – for its durability and low maintenance, – costing just under £1,800.
To help reduce the impact on their budget, the unit began to fundraise and look for charitable support to make their idea a reality.
A patient’s mother hosted a charity day at a local community pub, with live music, food, stalls and a raffle. This raised an incredible £1,030.
Staff got involved with the fundraising too.
Becky Harding, Professional Lead Occupational Therapist, for Hampshire and Isle of Wight, abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. She raised £600 as part of a event. Half of this was used for the shelter project at Ravenswood House, with the other half supporting a similar project at Tatchbury Mount, a nearby unit.
The remaining £500 was kindly approved by Brighterway, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare’s official charity. They provided that extra bit of support, enabling the project to go ahead.
The shelter, which is already a popular space, was installed by the Estates Team and made safe, ready for use.
Patients, carers and staff now have a space to meet outdoors for individual sessions, visits and activities. The shelter supports access to nature and enhances the therapeutic environment—an important factor in a forensic setting.
This project is a great example of how collaboration, creativity and community support make a real difference to the lives of patients, staff and families. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.
